Toolkit for the modern lightweight cycle For day runs and weekend toursThe toolkit for the modern lightweight cycle does not need so many or heavy tools, most things these days are made with Allen sockets instead of hexagon headed bolts. Many types of bolts have Allen Sockets and can be used to replace hexagon head bolts. They can be obtained from good engineers stores, often in srainless steel. Good quality pedals are made with hexagon fitting and Allen sockets. |

The
toolkit needs to have
Allen keys ranging from 2mm to 8mm (some "Vee" brakes
need a 2.5mm Allen key, which is not easily obtainable). I recently
found a very good multi-tool at the ASDA supermarket, it has 2mm to
8mm (including the 2.5mm) keys plus a Philips and flat blade
screwdriver, for £3.97. 1 or 2 spanners are sometimes useful,
a
small bottle of oil, 2 tyre levers (for REMOVING tyres, NOT putting
them on). A puncture repair outfit and a spare tube.

The
previous toolkit plus
a second spare tube and a spare tyre (this should be packed in three
coils and tied). A chain link tool, very small pliers, some tying
wire, plastic cable clips of various sizes, spare inner cables for
brakes and gears.Spare tyre – done up in three coils. The correct way to carry a tyre (coiled in three it does not twist the wires). Practice on an old tyre to get the hang of it. Crank threads on pedal, covered with "Copperslip" grease, the copper particles prevent threads "seizing" due to rust. |
