Cycle-Camping
Stoves & Canteens (Gas, Petrol & Multi-fuel) When
you are cycle-camping it is essential to have a stove to heat water
at least for the early morning brew-up. Most people will settle for a
gas cartridge stove and these can be the best for the odd weekend.
For a holiday tour of a week or more, it may be better to use a
petrol or multi-fuel stove. There are 3 different types of gas
cartridge (pierceable, screw valve and clamp valve). The first two
are a universal type whilst the latter is the patent of the Camping
Gaz Co.
The petrol stove can be of a simple type which has no pump, or can have a pump which can be screwed shut to prevent leaks. |

| Many
people are afraid of petrol as they think it is dangerous, yet they
quite happily use gas which is more dangerous. There have been quite
serious accidents with gas stoves and lamps which have leaked,
resulting in an explosion in a tent. Given reasonable care in use a
petrol stove is the safer of the two. The rubber “O” ring seals must be checked often whether they are on gas stoves, petrol stoves or containers. There are basically two types of stove in both fuel types, The cheaper high level stove and the more expensive low level stove which has a hose connection for the fuel. Go Gas High Level Stove needs a firm base to stand on. This burner is being used with the adapter for a pierceable cartridge. |

My full MSR "Whisperlite" stove kit When travelling the kit is quite compact. It is the bag (filled with the small parts), two bottles (one with the windshield wrapped around it), the circular baffle plate and (my addition) the octagonal toaster. |
Mountain Safety Research "Whisperlight" Petrol Stove MSR Whisperlite stove, can use a number of fuels. It is best to use this low level stove on bare soil, gravel or at least a plate to absorb the heat and protect the grass. I use a plywood plate. |

All
sizes of canteens are available from the one man job to the family
size. For serious cooking, a steamer can usually be found to fit the
medium size saucepans, This will
enable the cooking of a full meal on one burner.
When cooking vegetables you can, with practice, cook potatoes, runner beans, cabbage, carrots in the same time. The art is to cut the potatoes into several pieces, slice the carrots either crosswise or lengthwise (Julien). With practice, you can get them cooked in ten minutes. |
While
there are gas lanterns similar to the high level stove, I recommend
that you use the multi-LED lights which are available now (and much
cheaper than gas lanterns). They are much safer in a tent. I understand that some are available which have 32 LED's and use 3xAA cells for power. Price around £4. They are reputed to provide sufficient light for reading, which can't be bad. |
