A circular cycle route East of Cambridge by George Rich
This is a ride of about 35 Miles starting in the centre of Cambridge,taking in some villages North of the A14 before going through the wooded area south of this road around Dullingham before returning to Cambridge. There are no cafés on this route, but there are several public houses many selling food.

Abbreviations: (L) Turn Left, (R) Turn Right, (SO) Straight On, (SP) Sign Post, (X) Cross Roads, (R51) Route 51.

The ride starts from Parkers Piece, start at kiosk/toilets, take diagonal path over park  (SP) Chesterton. Turn (L) on to road. Traffic Lights. Turn (R) (SP) Arbury etc. At the end of this road (SO) over path and into Fair Street. Light controlled cycle crossing and on to Midsummer Common. Take the cycle path across the Common. Take right hand fork. (SP) Chesterton, Arbury.

At the end of this path you should now have reached the river, and the Cutter Ferry Bridge. Cycle under the bridge. You are now on Sustrans Route Number 51 (R51). which we follow for a few miles. Our route now takes us beside the river Cam. Follow (R51) Signs. After leaving Midsummer Common we are now on a road again for a short time Riverside.

(SO).Stourbridge Common. (R51). We follow the river on our cycle path. The path goes under a railway bridge. We are now on Ditton Meadows. On leaving Ditton Meadows there is a junction with other cycle paths. Make sure you go (SO) on (R51). At the end of this section of the path you have now reached a main road (Ditton Lane) (SO) over Pedestrian Crossing . (R51), and into Fison Road.. Continue Thorpe Way. (L) Tiptree Close. The path (R51) now goes across open fields until we reach Newmarket Road, Park and Ride Site. Follow the signs (R51). You will pass the waiting room on your left, here there are toilets and a drinks machine. Should you have come to Cambridge by car to start the ride. You could leave your car here and start the ride at this point. (Free car park).

On leaving the car park turn (L) on to the cycle path that runs alongside the main road. Route 51. Continue along this path for over a mile until following the 51 signs you will turn (L) and pass through a tunnel under the A14. After the tunnel turn (R) and soon you will see QUY church ahead. Here cross the road by the light controlled cycle crossing. Pass in front of the Churchyard wall, turn left and follow path beside the main road. Continue (SO) passing the Prince Albert pub on your left. After the pub take the first (L) to BOTTISHAM, (Bell Road). At the Bell pub turn (L), then at a small green turn (R) (Tunbridge Lane) (SP) (R51). The next place you will reach is SWAFFHAM BULBECK.

In this village turn (R)(SP) Newmarket 3 miles. At the top of the little hill we leave (R51) and turn (R). (SP) Newmarket. Note we are now on (R51).
The road is now slightly undulating, open country with good views on either side. You should now pass over a bridge over the A 14. At the (X) (SO). Turn (R) on A1304 then first (L)(SP) Dullingham. The road now goes gently up hill, You will pass Cambridge and Newmarket Polo Club Ground on your right There is now a level crossing, Dullingham Station is on your right. Trains from here go to Cambridge and Newmarket. After Dullingham Station take the first turning on your left. No (SP), Eagle Lane.

(SO) at (X) (take care here). (R) at (X)  (Stetchworth Park). Continue and you will now enter STETCHWORTH village. On your right The Marquis of Granby. (good stop for food). Distance to pub about 16.5 miles.

Marquis of Granby. (good stop for food). Distance to pub about 16.5 miles. Turn (R) at pub. (SP) Dullingham. (Kettle Lane) Continue to DULLINGHAM, cross roads in village. (on your left at (X) picnic area on the green, also to your left, The Boot public house, no food on Sundays). At X roads (SO) into Station Road.

Turn (L) (SP) Westley Waterless and Brinkley(X) (SO). Next (X) turn (R) (SP) Six Mile Bottom and Cambridge(SO) at (X)(SP) Little Wilbraham. Note Green Man pub on your right. Continue. Turn (L) into Rectory Farm Road. (SP) Great Wilbraham and Fulbourn Continue to Great Wilbraham.

Continue to Fulbourn. Turn (R) in village and pass by the Six Bells Public House. After the pub turn (L) in to Pierce Lane Continue to the Bakers Arms PH .Turn (R) (SP) Teversham In TEVERSHAM turn (R) at the Rose and Crown Public House. (SP) Cambridge. Tee Junction (Airport Way) turn (R) and join cycle path on far side of road. At main road turn (L), but keep on cycle path beside the airfield. Keep (SO) until the entrance to the Park and Ride site, then cross the road by the light controlled crossing. Rejoin (R51) and retrace outward route towards Cambridge. Jubilee Cycle Way , Your road home.
