Cambridge & Cambourne to Bedford

This route to Bedford covers purpose built cycle/footpaths, and minor roads. One short length is on a by-pass which has a marked margin. A stop can be made at Cambourne, for refreshment at Morrisons café (good lunches at moderate cost).
Key to abbreviations:
(RA) = Roundabout,                             (MRA) = Mini-roundabout,
(L) = Left turn,                                            
(R) = Right turn,
(SO) = Straight on,                                     (T) = Tee junction,
(XRDS) = Cross roads,                               (TL) = Traffic Lights,
(CP) = Cycle path,

Starting at Great St Mary's Church on Kings Parade, face the Senate House and to the right is Senate House Passage, take this and at the other end take a (R) and (L) into Garret Hostel Lane.

At the toucan crossing (TL), cross Queens Road into Burrells Walk, take the right fork at the stream to the crossing at Grange Road (TL), cross to Adams Road. At the end, cross Wilberforce Road to the Coton Footpath (CP), continue on this to cross the M11 (by bridge) into Coton.

(SO) at The Plough and at the three way junction (R) to the A1303w, (L) onto the cycle/footpath to (RA) at Madingley Mulch (on left), (L) to Hardwick.

At Hardwick the cycle route becomes a lane on each side of the road, continue on the lane to the A428 junction. At the (RA) (L) onto the old road. At next (RA) 3rd (L) and continue to Cambourne. At the (RA), take 2nd (L). Cross the bridge over the A428 and 2nd (L) at (RA) (SO) at next (RA) you can lock your bike to Sheffield stands at Morrisons Supermarket where you can get a very reasonably priced meal.
At the High Street (R) take School Lane through Lower Cambourne to the A1198 Caxton By-pass, at the (RA) take (R) and at the next (RA) (L) to Caxton.

On entering Caxton from the north take the first (R) (St Peters Street) and continue through ford (with care, potholes or use bridge) to Gransden Road, (R) for Great Gransden.
On entering Gt Gransden, (SO) at (XRDS) and at the (MRA) (R), at (T) (R), continue on till (L) for Waresley.

At Waresley (SO) Gamlingay road and (R) for Everton & Sandy, at (XRDS) (SO), next (XRDS) (R) for Everton, at (T) (R) for Everton (good lunch stop at The Thornton Arms), continue on to Sandy.
After approx. 1.5 miles bear right half way down hill onto No Through Road except for cycles.
Follow lane through woods and over railway to Sandy.
Note there is an off road route via Sustrans Route 12 through Sandy but it has problems with sight lines
and is narrow in some places and so is not recommended. Café and Pubs in Sandy.

Straight on to junction with B1042 where (R) for about 100 yds. At (RA) 2nd (L). On St. Neots Rd. Forward for 1⁄2 mile to A1 junction

Cross to footpath on right and walk about 25 yds to Bridleway down beside A1
Left through bridge under A1

The cycle track is generally quite good with few problems. Be aware that the track is shared and it is important to warn pedestrians and their animals of your approach. A bell is a very useful warning but be aware that some people will not hear it. (SO) after bridge on concrete road and continue straight onto cycle track.
Follow cycle track to Blunham. (Mileage to Bedford on road sign is wrong )

At road double back where railway bridge used to be and 1st L Old Station Court
Follow road through estate and join cycle path on old railway line.
Follow railway path beside the River Ouse close to Willington.
You are advised to dismount for a short section where path turns hard left from the river and is very
narrow and runs between high hedges.
There is a café on right between the path and the river at Danish Camp.

Continue for about 4 miles passing over the A421 and the River Ouse
The path leads to the Priory Park where refreshments are available.
To continue (R) and (L) across entrance road.
Continue to leisure centre, a modern pyramid, and then follow signs to Town Centre.

Alternative Route from Everton.
In Everton village after sharp left bend take (R) signed Tempsford (Potton).
Pass site of Tempsford Aerodrome where many flights were made into occupied France during World War Two.
Cross East Coast Main Line to (T) before A1
(L) Sign Blunham (Everton).
At (RA) 2nd (L) over A1. Sign Blunham (Lt. Barford)
Second (RA). 1st (L) Signed Blunham. ( Lt. Barford).
At (T) (R) signed Blunham (Lt. Barford) and continue over River Ivel.
(SO) in Blunham.
At top of hill (L) signed Moggerhanger

After about 1/3 mile (R) on Old Station Court and rejoin main route,
